Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)... very popular poet, born in
Portland, Maine. This bust is at the Grand-Pre site because of his very
famous poem, Evangeline. Written in 1847, it tells of the cruelty and
sufferings endured by the expelled Acadians at the hands of the British.
Although the poem is in part fiction and not necessarily an accurate
account of the facts of history, it has been well read and respected
by many generations of Acadian descendants and others as well.
